Sunday at SXSW ’07 was an eventful one for a number of reasons: a good mix of panels, the Web Awards, Selection Sunday games & bracketology, and some nasty, nasty weather. Here’s my report.

I just finished the first of many more long days at my inaugural visit to Austin & SXSW Interactive. I saw lots of interactive design celebrities, some great panels, some not-so-great panels and tons of stuff in between. Here’s my report.
Proper Alphabetization in the Digital Age Redux

Just two weeks ago I whined about the lack of proper alphabetization in an iTunes/iPod world. The folks at Apple must’ve heard my cries.
Proper Alphabetization in the Digital Age

I have succombed. After eight years of forcing proper alphabetization of my now-massive digital music collection, I have moved to the defacto standard of first name/last name artist listings. I do it begrudgingly. Two big questions stuck in my head as I spend about five hours retagging files: is proper alphabetization even necessary? And why didn’t someone think up a solution for this a long time ago?
Cellullar Companies Want My Money

So my two year agreement was up last week, and I had the opportunity to get $50 (or $100, it’s hard to tell) dollars towards an “upgrade” in my phone. I had been quite happy with my old phone, but ever since Sasquatch when my phone was left in my ice-water soaked pocket, the front screen’s been toast and sometimes my microphone’s kind of faulty. So I had to get a new one. Which is too bad, because for a basic feature set, entry-level phone, it was more than adequate for my needs.
Sitting in the Front Row

I just got a new Mac mini this week to run as both a media center and a PC. I haven’t yet set up the PC portion, but after a couple of days of using it as a media center, I’m loving it, mostly because of the beauty that is Front Row.
Forecasting the Portable Media Center

I was headed out yesterday for a family Easter dinner and unfortunately had
to leave right as the Michigan State/Kentucky game was headed to the second
overtime.
What to do? Well, seeing how I didn’t have to drive, I brought along my handheld
TV.(It’s a nice little 2-inch Casio color screen, with VHF/UHF receivers. I think
it cost about 100 bucks). On the way home four hours later, I realized I didn’t
tape (yes, tape,
not Tivo–unfortunately)
Arrested Development. Easy fix–turn on the little telly and watch me some
comedy.
All this got me thinking about portable media centers, the PSP, the planned Tivo To Go and the future of television. Given what has happened to music, it is clear that video will be headed towards portability as well, even if Steve Jobs is right when he says video and gaming are “foreground” activities. So who is going to make that killer app and/or killer device that will carry the concept into the future like the iPod did for music? The future rests on the shoulders of those who can find that perfect union of content, delivery and device.
