Commentary

  • Bob (Volume 2, Issue 6: Solstice)

the lemon of pink… has been on super-repeat now. i agree that one could “listen all day” to this track. do you know Moondog? an interesting historical figure that this music is kin to (esp. for new yorkers past and future!). effing gorgeous, this Books …

  • Bob (Volume 2, Issue 6: Solstice)

lesse…. last time i looked up i think it was groundhog day, and i didn’t get any sleep until july 5. now i have a stack-o-shaun’s to enjoy, and i say hooray for the enhanced liner notes, the theme, and of course the musics. loving all of it. …

  • Erin (Volume 2, Issue 5: Livin' It & Lovin' It)

well….given the fact I havent seen my siblings since December, I was a happy girl to open my mailbox and find JAY enjoying the sunshine in his typical MacGyver ways…
In terms of the CD, I popped it into my CD player this morning on the way to school …

  • Emily (Volume 2, Issue 5: Livin' It & Lovin' It)

    YAY! Good tunes!

    P.S. Go Jay! :)

  • Brian (Volume 2, Issue 4: Standard Definition)

    I agree with Emily!
    I’m missing “Superhero” from Entourage.

And I’m surprised that “I’ll be There For You” wound up on the cutting room floor.

    Such an iconic theme song!

    Great theme this month!
(still working my way through the disc!)

  • Emily (Volume 2, Issue 4: Standard Definition)

    AAAAAAAAGHHH!!
    Best ever!!!!!!
(And I haven’t even gotten it yet…I’m just excited in advance.)
I am, however, already missing “Woke Up This Morning,” “The Fresh Prince…,” “Superhero,” and “Baba O’Riley.” Those CSI folks cornered the market on picking good theme songs. Thank you for sparing me the song …

  • Shaun (Volume 2, Issue 4: Standard Definition)

Left on the cutting room floor (in the case of the WB shows and The One With the Six Good Looking People Living Above Their Means in NYC, I did it for our collective sanity):

“Woke Up This Morning (Chosen One Mix)” by A3 (The Sopranos)
“Love and Marriage” by Frank …

  • Erin (Volume 2, Issue 3: This Is Madness)

this was an interesting one! very well thought out, but with more “wildcards” in terms of songs i really liked…..as always, you are genius, but this one will take a few more listens on my part!

  • Sarah (Volume 2, Issue 3: This Is Madness)

Shaun! So much to say! This mix has some of my favorite songs. Does that mean I’m crazy since they are all about insanity? From classic Hendrix, a new discovery of a great Kinks song, the ominous Madman Across the Water!!!, the iconically significant Doors “The End”, personal love …

  • Bob (Volume 2, Issue 2: Pup-E Luv)

cool, man! thanks for the links!

  • Shaun (Volume 2, Issue 2: Pup-E Luv)

Bob, ask and you shall receive. All the artists now link directly to last.fm. Oh, and that Madonna song is no remix… that’s just how the Mirwais-produced Music actually sounds.

Erin, to answer your question, I usually have at least half of the songs already in my library. The rest I …

  • Erin (Volume 2, Issue 2: Pup-E Luv)

How in the world do you know where to find/how to fit together all of these songs every month? Amazing. Another reminder of my music retardedness, i have always loved “Love at First Sight” but didnt know it was Kylie Minogue!! Also, thanks for the JT shout …

  • Bob (Volume 2, Issue 2: Pup-E Luv)

OMG, this whole thing vaults me into the middle of 1980’s, commander salamander, that Gary Numan concert, thin leather ties, and the girls with impossibly big hair. Shaun! a whole new deviously irrepresible mix! it’s a crazy contempo-retro time capsule. delicious. (great cover art …

  • Kiah (Volume 2, Issue 1: The Best of 2007)

Big ups to Shaun, for sure, these mixes are a SOLID dose of what was amazing in 07, some of which passed by me unnoticed, until now. Loooove that Elvis Perkins joint, I’d never noticed I liked him this much until I listened to this mix. And …

  • Erin (Volume 2, Issue 1: The Best of 2007)

hmmm….i left a message as soon as I listened to the CD, but for some reason it didnt post….as always, thank you for expanding my music horizons and putting out an awesome ED. loved them all….especially carrying a stone, and the band of horses shout out!!!

  • Eli (Volume 2, Issue 1: The Best of 2007)

The Scene: A crowded bar. Shaun’s mix is playing at full blast as the audience listens silently. The final notes of “Umbrella” – the last song on disc two – gently fade out into utter silence. The crowd sits stunned. There is no movement, no sound. Then, slowly, from the …

  • Emily (Volume 2, Issue 1: The Best of 2007)

Shaun, you have outdone yourself. I had this on all day today, and once again have you to thank for introducing me to artists that have never been on my radar, as well as for showing me the light in terms of those artists that I had written off for …

  • Bob Redmond (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

Well issue #5, through no fault of the MC, and only via some cosmic collusion, caused my computer to refuse to play beyond the first two tracks of audio CD’s. Took a while to fix and as a result I’ve been catching up (and having extremely truncated listens to …

  • Erin (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

....wow. did i really write “all though” ? obviously it is finals week and my brain is fried!!

  • Erin (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

Thank you!! Just what i needed during finals….and i agree, i appreciate that it wasnt typical “island music”....all though i should have known not to read one of your cd’s just by it’s cover! see you soon!

  • Hailie (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

I feel like I’m back home…lovin’ the relaxation during finals week…THANK YOU!

  • Karina (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

    Beautiful, as usual.

Makes me warm just listening to it. Despite the fact that my toes are currently numb…

  • Winsor (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

    Thank you
    for wiping clean the stereotypical….
    no Jimmy Buffet
    no Leon Redbone
    no reggae
    no steel drums

    only one Beach Boys song

and 18 more tracks of sun-filled bliss.

    Thank you

  • Meaghan (Volume 1, Issue 6: Island Time)

Great way to start, great way to end. The Beach Boys are necessary, glad you saved the quintessential artist for the end. I also really enjoyed the Beulah song, that entire album makes me think of summer and laying on the beach. You should also check out …

  • Eli (Volume 1, Issue 5: Neither Snow Nor Rain)

Please Mr. Postman is by the Marvellettes? I always thought it was by the Supremes, but what do I know? Either way, that song is funky, and someone should probably remix it/sample it. Kanye? Maybe he could call it Mr. I.T. Guy?

  • Meaghan (Volume 1, Issue 5: Neither Snow Nor Rain)

Lovely mix, per usual. Anything with a little Buddy Holly thrown in is alright with me. Since you asked for suggestions, I might include “Elevator Love Letter” by Stars. Or “Letter to Elise” is always nice, by The Cure. And, although there is no letter in …

  • Kiah (Volume 1, Issue 5: Neither Snow Nor Rain)

starting with PUSA put a smile on my face for sure. and that midsection? starting with Wilco, then Cash, Buddy Holly…. so good. and big-ups for putting At The Drive-In on this guy. Who’d have thunk they could share space with the Man in …

  • Bob Redmond (Volume 1, Issue 4: Harvest Moon)

Here I was, grooving to the fall flavor in Harvest Moon. After a few listens I figure to check the track listing… hey! All these songs have “moon” in the title! That’s how smooth is the mix, or how like that big ol’ harvest moon: suddenly …

  • Laura (Volume 1, Issue 4: Harvest Moon)

Great mix! I would also add:
Greg Brown – Milk of the Moon
Neko Case – I Wish I Was the Moon
Echo and the Bunnymen – The Killing Moon

  • Laura (Volume 1, Issue 3: Old Soul)

Definitely dig this one. Based on the selection of tracks, it seems like you like the harder, funkier Stax Records style of soul as opposed to the glossier, sweeter Motown sound. I’ll send you a mix of the latter that I’ve been working on.

  • Erin (Volume 1, Issue 4: Harvest Moon)

Once again…love. You are so good at the mix action, and i am so bad at the social experiment-what to say to comment stuff. :o) but it is great, as always.

  • Erin (Volume 1, Issue 3: Old Soul)

    also my favorite…

  • Eli (Volume 1, Issue 4: Harvest Moon)

Sweet Mix. Great for some lazy October days. We’ve been pumping it at the Woolly Mammoth and sales are up ten fold. Actually, I’m not sure if that’s true but we’re super busy. nonetheless.

  • Kiah (Volume 1, Issue 3: Old Soul)

And one more thing. I’ve got a mix from a couple Brits I met a couple years ago that you’d LOVE if you like this. Let me know, I’ll bring it in for you. Two hours of glory.

  • Kiah (Volume 1, Issue 3: Old Soul)

So this is by far my favorite mix yet (though the Harvest Moon is sitting on my desk waiting for me to listen). But you can’t EVER go wrong with old soul. The only way this mix could be better is if it were on vinyl.

  • korum (Volume 1, Issue 4: Harvest Moon)

I like this new mix! However it seems to be missing the Body Movin’/Bad Moon Rising mash-up!

    I’ll email it to you…

  • Kate Jackson (Volume 1, Issue 2: Dog Day Afternoon)

    Perfection…per usual.

  • Ricky (Volume 1, Issue 2: Dog Day Afternoon)

Nice work Stumpy…considering it’s over 100 here right now, the CD fits the mood.

  • Sarah (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

Very interesting Shaun! I’ve been looking for a place to act out my secret desire to be a music critic. —-“I want a new drug” love it! He’s definitely on a different drug than Huey and I want Glenn’s. “Beautiful” – sorry shaun not a fan. I’m not in …

  • Shannon (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

What about “Creep” by Afghan Whigs? That should be on here.

  • Emily (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

This is so much fun, Shaun. I can’t wait for next month’s selections… It’s so hard for me to pick favorites here… I really liked “Rusty Cage,” “Wonderwall” (which—-blasphemy!—-I might even prefer to the Oasis version), and of course, Mike Doughty’s cover of “Real Love.”
    These are great!

  • Meaghan (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

So, it generally takes me about 3 listens to really have a new CD sink in, and most of these tracks are new to me. However, I CAN say that when Clem Snide’s Beautiful came on, I said out loud (in my empty studio apartment) — “Thank you …

  • Shaun (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

So I found this the other day: the NY Post’s list of the Top 100 Cover Songs. Not all of them fit my theme, and I can’t say I agree with the whole list, but it’s worth checking out.

  • Matt Griffith (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

I love Let My Love and Everyday, and Against All Odds is amazing. We are looking forward to next month.

  • Aubbie (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

Flash, I love this mix, and I can’t wait to see what you do next. Way to set the bar high, as always.

  • Erin (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

Awesome!! Thank you, Shaun…for always expanding my music mind! :o)

  • korum (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

Great mix Shaun. Thanks for putting me on the list!

My old band, The Dead Science, once did a cover of Terrence Trent D’arby’s “Sign Your Name.” It got pretty good radio play on the college/independent channels. Unfortunately, it was the one song on the album that was drumless.

    It definitely takes …

  • shaun (Volume 1, Issue 1: Reconstruction)

Leave a comment, share in the discussion! Let me know what you think of the mix, the club or whatever. Share a song that should've been on the mix! I love to be introduced to new stuff.

This Month

Volume 2, Issue 7: Summer In the City

There’s something about the warm weather that brings out the suburban-white-kid-posing-as-urban-black-kid in me. I’m all for hip-hop (of a certain ilk), but I rarely find myself playing it until it gets HOT outside. Does that make me a bad person? I hope not, cause I have no shame blasting rap music from my car’s speakers on a sunny day in July. You shouldn’t be ashamed either. Turn the volume up, roll your windows down, and enjoy the summer in the city.

About the Mix CD of the Month Club

MC2 is the brainchild of Shaun Swick, a lifelong music lover and mix tape enthusiast. Each month, the Club features a new CD built around a theme of Shaun's choosing. Each mix is carefully crafted from start to finish as a cohesive unit, rather than simply a collection of disparate tracks. Or at least that's the goal. As the listener, you are under no obligation to like all of the songs featured herein, though it would be a welcome surprise if you did.
