Great mix Shaun. Thanks for putting me on the list!
My old band, The Dead Science, once did a cover of Terrence Trent D’arby’s “Sign Your Name.” It got pretty good radio play on the college/independent channels. Unfortunately, it was the one song on the album that was drumless.
It definitely takes a different approach to the song though. Check it out on iTunes.

So I found this the other day: the NY Post’s list of the Top 100 Cover Songs. Not all of them fit my theme, and I can’t say I agree with the whole list, but it’s worth checking out.

So, it generally takes me about 3 listens to really have a new CD sink in, and most of these tracks are new to me. However, I CAN say that when Clem Snide’s Beautiful came on, I said out loud (in my empty studio apartment) — “Thank you Shaun!!” That, along with Clem Snide’s cover of I’ll Be Your Mirror, are some of my favorite covers.
I still really need to send you Casiotone For The Painfully Alone’s cover of Hot Boyz. It’s brilliant. Perhaps a reactionary mix is in order? My favorite covers that are structured like the originals, however I tend to think they’re better than the original…
Thanks for the mix, Shaun!

This is so much fun, Shaun. I can’t wait for next month’s selections… It’s so hard for me to pick favorites here… I really liked “Rusty Cage,” “Wonderwall” (which—-blasphemy!—-I might even prefer to the Oasis version), and of course, Mike Doughty’s cover of “Real Love.”
These are great!

What about “Creep” by Afghan Whigs? That should be on here.

Very interesting Shaun! I’ve been looking for a place to act out my secret desire to be a music critic. —-“I want a new drug” love it! He’s definitely on a different drug than Huey and I want Glenn’s. “Beautiful” – sorry shaun not a fan. I’m not in the X-tina fan club or anything. I’m just saying I’m tired of whiny indie boy singers and this would be a perfect example. “When doves cry” – Am I at a drunken Karaoke night wih a drunk singer and excellent jazz band? “Rusty Cage”- I really felt like Cash should have written this song. So perfect! Awesome! “Wonderwall”- Gorgeous! love it better than Oasis, but they’re wankers anyway. “Close to me”- not to leave on a sour note, but I’m just saying wow- what the hell did they do to that song? Great Job Shaun. Thank you so much for doing this!
